Cover 2 looks simple. Two safeties high and everything in front. But if you don’t understand where it’s weak, you’ll force throws and miss opportunities. Learn how to see it, confirm it, and attack it the right way.
Think of defensive coverages as 11 defenders being spread across open space. In Cover 2, the defense is divided into two deep defenders (the safeties) and five underneath defenders. That means two players are responsible for covering three deep vertical threats, while five defenders handle the short zones underneath.
Because of that imbalance, the defense is naturally stretched vertically, and the stress falls on the safeties. As a quarterback, this tells you that you’re most likely to beat Cover 2 in the deeper voids — specifically the seams between the safeties and the sideline holes outside — where two defenders are forced to cover too much space.
