Cover 3
Cover 3 splits the deep field into three zones, with both corners responsible for the outside thirds and the free safety controlling the deep middle. Underneath, four defenders handle curl/flat and hook zones. It’s a zone-heavy coverage built to limit deep shots while keeping eyes on the QB.
Cover 3 Buzz
In Cover 3 Buzz, a safety rotates down into the curl/flat area, replacing a linebacker. This allows the defense to strengthen underneath coverage and disguise the look pre-snap. The structure still maintains three deep zones but changes who controls the flats and hook areas.
Cover 3 Cloud
Cover 3 Cloud flips the responsibilities on one side, with the corner sitting in the flat instead of dropping deep. The safety rotates over the top to take the deep third. This is often used to handle strong receivers or quick game to one side while keeping Cover 3 structure elsewhere.
Cover 3 Buzz Mable
Cover 3 Buzz Mable is an asymmetrical version of Cover 3, typically used against trips formations. One side plays Cloud (corner in the flat), while the other side plays Buzz (safety dropping down). This allows the defense to match numbers and route distributions while still maintaining three deep coverage.
